About This Course

The PADI Advanced Mermaid Course expands on the skills learned in the PADI Mermaid Certification, taking them into an open water setting. In this course, you'll gain an understanding of how open water environments differ from pools or confined water, including aspects such as greater depth, larger size, and more variable conditions.

Additionally, you'll learn about aquatic life—what to expect, how it may interact with you, and ways to ensure safety for both yourself and the marine environment.

To enroll in the PADI Advanced Mermaid Course, participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 12 years old

  • Be in good physical health and comfortable in the water

  • Be able to swim at least 100 meters (320 feet) without the use of swimming aids

  • Be able to float comfortably on the surface for at least 10 minutes

Academic Overview

The PADI Advanced Mermaid Course is structured into three phases:

  • Knowledge Development: Complete independent study through the PADI Mermaid eLearning program. (If eLearning is not available in your language, your instructor may conduct in-person class sessions.)

  • Confined Water Sessions: Participate in two confined water sessions designed to enhance your mermaiding skills, including rescue and problem management techniques. You will also practice specialized mermaid movements such as dolphin (butterfly) kicks, C-shape turns, and U-shape side turns, along with other unique maneuvers like backward somersault turns, underwater handshakes, mermaid bubbles, and back glides.

  • Open Water Sessions: Engage in open water dives in a natural body of water or a purpose-built site significantly larger than a pool, suitable for mermaid diving. Here, you'll learn to set up, conduct, and execute open water mermaid dives, incorporating environmentally conscious mermaid diving techniques.
